CensorNet Ltd was established in 2005 to commercialise the original open source "CensorNet" project, which was active between 2001 and 2006. CensorNet was a downloadable CD image that would convert a PC or server into a fully functional web filtering proxy server. CensorNet had over a million downloads and to this day there are many original CensorNet servers still in use (although the project officially closed in 2006).

The first commercial version, named "CensorNet Professional", was launched in February 2007 and continues to be used and praised by organisations globally to the present day. CensorNet Professional has received various accreditations, including Checkmark Premium certification from West Coast Labs (2008), shortlisting for the BETT Awards in 2008 and obtained the coveted BECTA accreditation from the UK Department of Education in 2011.

In 2009, CensorNet Ltd expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of CensorNet MailSafe - a hosted e-mail management solution which provides anti-spam, anti-virus, archiving and e-mail management without needing any hardware or software to be installed at the customer premises. In 2010, this platform was also made available to managed service providers and ISP's, under the banner of "Carrier class services".

In 2010 CensorNet Ltd began development of an entirely new platform for delivering a web filtering service from the cloud. As a member of the ICAP Forum, CensorNet Ltd is committed to developing a standards based platform that is ideal for service providers by being infinitely scalable whilst requiring the minimum infrastructure. The CensorNet Cloud solution will be available during the 3rd quarter of 2011 under the "www.cloudwebfiltering.com" name and complements the "Carrier class services" division already established.
