Synopsis

You would like to install CensorNet on your network and use it to monitor user activity without blocking any web pages. Open mode is not useful because you cannot report on the types of sites visited.

Article

It is possible to do this with CensorNet. You will need to follow these steps:-

  1. Configure user authentication under System->Configuration->User Authentication if you want usernames to appear in the reports.
  2. Set "Allow IP addresses" under System->Configuration->IP Blocking Method
  3. Go to Policies -> Manage Policies and click on the DEFAULT policy. Choose a colour for it then scroll to the bottom and click Copy. Call it "Stealth Mode" and press OK. Now you have backed up the DEFAULT policy so you can revert back to it at any time.
  4. Click on the "Stealth Mode" policy from within the Policy Manager. Change "If Rules Conflict" to "Allow rules override Block rules" and "Dynamic Sites" to "URL database categories override real-time rating".
  5. Now, in each of the modules (Custom URL, Content Classifier, File Extension & MIME Type) set all the categories to "Allow".
  6. Turn the Active Image Control OFF
  7. Set all the items in the Upload Module to "Ignore"
  8. Save the policy.
  9. Go to System -> Configuration -> SSL Intercept mode and set it to "Disable", or install CA certificates on all workstations first using group policy.
  10. Under Policies -> Manage Policies change the Default Policy to be "Stealth Mode"
  11. Configure your web browser to use CensorNet on port 8080. You will be able to browse the web and access any type of web site.
  12. Click on Reports -> Who's Browsing and the username should appear in the list. Click on the username to drill down on what sites they have visited. After 15 minutes the reports will start filling up with useful information about browsing habits and trends.
