Upgrading CensorNet Professional

Synopsis

Please follow these instructions for upgrading your version of CensorNet Professional

Step 1 - Clean-up

If you run a busy network with lots of users, please tidy up your CensorNet server before upgrading as it will speed things up for you. You can use our House Keeping article to help. 

 

Step 2 - Backup

You can perform the backup via System / Maintenance / Database Backup/Restore from within the Web Control Panel. Save the backup file to your local machine for safe keeping.

If you have customised access denied pages or custom firewall rules set up on your CensorNet server please refer to the house keeping instructions for step by step backup instructions. These files are not backed up by the Backup/Restore optoin.

 

Upgrade

Please be aware that during the upgrade procedure the CensorNet proxy server will be taken offline briefly and will refuse connections.

To perform the upgrade, you must login to your CensorNet server as root. You can do this at the console using a keyboard and monitor, or over the network using a tool such as PuTTY.

Start the 'setup' configuration tool by typing setup followed by <enter>.

Press enter to accept the welcome message.

Use the cursor key down arrow to highlight option 2 and press enter.

Read the warning! If you are happy to proceed, press the tab key to highlight OK and press enter

You may be prompted to "FIX PERMISSIONS OF CACHE DIR" - if you are, use the tab key to select Yes and then press  Enter.

Read the message and then press enter to continue. The update program will connect to the Internet and download a list of new packages to install. This may take a few moments depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

After a few moments you will be prompted to upgrade the CensorNet software. Type Y and then press enter

You will be prompted to verify you wish to upgrade the CensorNet software. Type Y and then press enter. This process may take several minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. 

You may be prompted to "FIX PERMISSIONS OF CACHE DIR" - if you are, use the tab key to select Yes and then press  Enter.

After a few moments the above dialog box will be shown. Press enter to exit the upgrade process. Use the tab key to select the EXIT button and press enter to exit the setup program.

Your CensorNet server has now been upgraded.

Occasionally the CensorNet server will require a reboot after upgrading. If a reboot is suggested then it is recommended that you do.
