Why does CensorNet use Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and not a later version?

Article

We have chosen Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server for some very good reasons:

  • In order to achieve VMware certification for our virtual appliance version of CensorNet we needed to choose Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server.
  • Versions 10.10 and 11.x of Ubuntu contains experimental and untested software, which we feel is unsuitable for a security sensitive server application like CensorNet.
  • 10.04 will be officially supported with security updates for much longer than 10.10 and 11.x

So all in all, 10.04 is a much more stable, reliable and secure than both 10.10 and 11.x at the moment. If the above points should change in the future then we will migrate the operating system version that CensorNet uses.
