CensorNet™ Professional Installation Guide for Debian 4.0 (Etch)

Introduction
CensorNet™ Professional is a Debian 4.0 Linux package. This means that you have to download and install Debian 4.0 onto a dedicated PC, server or Virtual Machine first, and then install the CensorNet™ software. This document will take you through the steps needed to install Debian 4.0 and CensorNet™. If you require any further assistance please contact Technical Support.

Downloading Debian 4.0 Linux
The first step is to download the Debian 4.0 installation CD-ROM image from one of the links below.
You may need to Righ click / Save As the links below.

If you cannot download the CD-ROM image for any reason or wish to order an actual CD/DVD then please visit http://www.cheeplinux.com.

Once the download has finished you will need to burn the image to a blank CD-ROM using CD burning software such as Burn4Free or Nero Burning Rom.

After you have burnt your Debian 4.0 installation CD, insert it into the PC or server you wish to install CensorNet™ on and boot it up. After a few seconds you should see the Debian Linux splash screen, as shown below:-

NOTE: By default, the Debian 4.0 installer will attempt to assign an IP address to the server automatically using DHCP. As this will be a CensorNet™ server, we need to specify a static IP address. To ensure that this happens, type the following before pressing enter:

install netcfg/disable_dhcp=true

Installing Debian - Language Selection
The first installation screen will prompt you to choose the base language for the Debian Linux operating system. Select the appropriate language from the list and press enter.

Installing Debian - Country Selection
The next step is to choose the country you are located in from the list and press enter.

Installing Debian - Keyboard Configuration
The next step is to choose the correct keyboard layout from the list and press enter.

Installing Debian - Network Configuration
The next step is to specify the network settings for your CensorNet™ server. You will need to have a spare IP address on your network and know the gateway and DNS server information. It is important that the supplied information is correct otherwise later on the installation may fail when attempting to download updates from the Internet.

Enter an IP address for your CensorNet™ server.

Enter the netmask for the IP address supplied in the previous step.

Enter the gateway IP address. This is normally the IP address of your router.

Enter the IP address of a valid DNS server. This is often the same as your router IP address.

Specify a hostname for your CensorNet™ server. You may use the default or enter a different hostname to suit your environment and then press enter. DO NOT USE THE SAME HOSTNAME AS YOUR DOMAIN CONTROLLER!

The final step to configure the network is to enter a suitable domain name for your CensorNet™ server. This is not a real domain name and you can safely make one up, for example censornet.local or example.com.

Installing Debian - Hard Disk Partitioning
The next step involves partitioning your hard disk for use by Debian Linux. The Debian 4.0 operating system will use the entire hard disk and erase the contents - you should only install the software on a dedicated PC, server or Virtual Machine.

Unless you are an advanced Linux administrator, simply select the default options that are presented to you. Examples are shown below.

The next step will format the hard disk. This will totally wipe, delete, remove, erase any data on the disk and prepare the disk for the Debian 4.0 Linux operating system.

To confirm use the TAB key to select the YES button and press ENTER.

It may take several minutes to format the partitions. A progress bar will indicate the time remaining.

Installing Debian - Root Password
The next step prompts you to enter a password for the root user account and verify it by entering it again.

The root user account is the Super User for the system. DO NOT FORGET THE PASSWORD YOU ENTER HERE.

Installing Debian - User Account Creation
The next step is to create a standard user. Enter a descriptive name for the standard user and press enter.

Next, enter the username for the standard user. This must be a single word with no spaces, e.g. administrator.
You will be asked to enter a password for the standard user twice.

Installing Debian - Copying Installation Files
The Debian 4.0 operating system will now be installed. This may take several minutes.

Installing Debian - Choosing a Mirror Site
The next step involves downloading the latest updates from a Debian mirror site on the Internet. When prompted, choose Yes to download updates from a mirror site.

Select the country where the network mirror tht you want to use is located. This is normally the country where your CensorNet™ server is located.

Next, select the actual mirror site to use.

If you have to use a HTTP proxy server to access the Internet then enter the details (click here for an explanation) when prompted otherwise simply press enter to continue and download the updates.

The installer will now attempt to contact the mirror site. If this fails, it is most likely due to incorrect Network Configuration settings. Please consult your network administrator.

You will be asked if you wish to participate in the Debian package survey. This is something operated by the Debian project and has nothing to do with CensorNet™. You may answer No if you do not wish to participate.

Installing Debian - Package Selection

The next step is to select the type of software to install. It is recommended that you de-select all of the default packages except Standard System and then press enter, as shown below.

By default, the Desktop Environment is selected. Press SPACE to de-select it and then TAB to highlight the Continue button and then press ENTER.

The required packages will then be downloaded from the mirror site. This may take several minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Installing Debian - Finalise Installation
After the packages have been installed you will be prompted to install the GRUB bootloader. Choose Yes.

After a few seconds the installation of the Debian 4.0 operating system is complete and the CD-ROM will be ejected automatically. Select "Continue" and wait while your new system reboots.

Installing CensorNet™
When the machine has booted up you will be presented with the Debian 4.0 console login prompt, as shown below.

Enter the username root and press enter then type in the root password (password will not appear on the screen) you set during installation and press enter. This will log you in as the Super User. Once logged in you will be presented with the standard Debian command line prompt.

Type the following: wget http://www.censornet.com/setup-censornet

This will download the CensorNet™ installation script.

If this hangs or fails with an error: You should first of all check your Internet connection. Try typing: ping www.censornet.com If it replies then do you need to use an upstream proxy server? If so, specify it by typing export http_proxy=http://ip.of.proxy:port and then retry the wget command. If the ping fails, check all Internet connection settings including DNS. If all fails, contact Technical Support for assistance.

To start the installation, type the following: sh setup-censornet

The following output will be shown:-

Press Enter to start the installation.

You may be prompted to answer various questions during the installation of CensorNet&trade - simply choose the default answers by pressing ENTER.

Please note: The CensorNet™ and dependent packages will be downloaded over the Internet and may take a while depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Once the CensorNet™ package has been installed, you will see the following:-

Accessing the CensorNet™ Control Panel
After the package is installed you will be able to start using CensorNet™ Professional.

From a workstation on the same network as the CensorNet™ server, open a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, and enter the following URL into the address bar:-

http://ip.of.censornet/censornet/

Where ip.of.censornet should be replaced with the IP address that you specified in the section above "Network Configuration".

You will then will be presented with the Control Panel login screen as shown below.

To login, use the following default credentials:-

Username: admin

Password: password

Congratulations - the CensorNet™ installation is complete.

You should now Request a Trial License to start using CensorNet™ Professional.
